Community railway heritage project

‘Our Railway in Years Gone By’ exhibition

ICCHS researchers Andrew Newman and Anna Goulding have been acting as advisors to the North Tyneside Steam Railway Association on the delivery of their community heritage project ‘Our Railway in Years Gone By’.

Supported through the HLF ‘All our Stories’ scheme and an AHRC ‘Research for Community Heritage’ grant, Andrew and Anna have been helping the Association to develop new interpretation material tracing the history of the industrial railway that once ran from Backworth Colliery down to the coal staithes on the River Tyne. The resulting exhibition and a collection of digital interviews are now on display in the Stephenson Railway Museum, with other interpretive panels installed in the railway carriages and along the disused trackbed.
